Story-Portraits at Spring Garden Church

9 Jan

A while back I was approached by Joanna James at Spring Garden Church who was doing a paper for school at Wycliffe.  The objective of her paper test and observe the effectiveness of photography in changing youths’ attitudes and fostering unity within a community with the following as her thesis:

The human story as told through photography, has the power to engage stakeholders, affect policy makers, and transform the internal attitudes and values of a community.

In her paper she flattered me beyond belief by talking about my initiative of Shutters for Change alongside Jeremy Cowart’s Help Portrait and Photovoice

Joanna had a number of youth and leaders of the Spring Garden youth Group participate by first sharing their thoughts on community and then by sharing their thoughts on how they view themselves.  The questionnaire was filled out at an event where I did a portrait with each of them.  They have been given copies of their portraits and a collage has been put together for them in the Youth lounge where they meet weekly.  One of the most telling questions in the questionnaire was one that asked the youth about a hardship that they have had to overcome.  Surprising, was the fact that one youth said that he had never stopped to think about these things.

I was honoured to be a part of giving them a voice and to have been thought of and talked about in the same breath as some truly revolutionary photographers.

Here are some of the images:

Sheldon And Sherien In Love

29 Nov

What a ridiculously good looking couple!

Sherien is a repeat client that you may recognize from the film Colour Me.  Some exciting news about the film, the Bell TIFF Lighbox has picked it up and will promote it as a part of Black History Month!

Sheldon and Sherien were really fun to hang out with and shoot for the afternoon, here is a series from our time together.

Serafina Solomon 4 days old.

14 Nov

4 days old!  that’s how old Serafina is and I had the privilege and honour, not only to meet her and hold her, but to take her picture.  I have a feeling that as she grows, many others will make many attempts to take her picture.  What a cutie!

Exposed. Twice.

7 Sep

I’ve been playing with the double exposure feature in the Nikon D90 and I really like the results.  I’m working on a series that I’ll be showing soon but today I did some as portraits.  After seeing the results, I may actually abandon the other series and stick to portraits for this type of shooting!  all of the images are exposed twice in camera and then in lightroom I applied a preset that I have developed to bring out some of the contrast and dark tones.

Studio In The Street

11 Jul

On Friday night, my friend and I set out, as we often do, to do some downtown shooting.  As I set out to meet him, I was reminded of a video I watched a while back of Clay Enos shooting portraits in the street.  This gave birth to the idea to set up a studio in the street.

We set up an umbrella with my flash and wireless trigger and a reflector against a wall on the corner of Queen and Peter streets at around 11pm and started stopping people for portraits.

Update – I took a more incognito approach here

Jay McIntyre Photography Street Studio First things First was a couple of test shots on Paul, which grabbed enough attention to start stopping people for their free portraits.

This concept generated a lot of discussion about model release forms and whether or not I need one for this kind of shooting.  There is absolutely no plan to profit from any of these images, they will never be used commercially, so I see no need for a model release form.  The purpose of this shoot was to get some on location lighting practice while also giving people a free portrait that they can use for their social media profile pics and such.  And for me to do something that terrifies me, making myself completely vulnerable to strangers.  That said, if you see yourself in this post and would like the image removed, please let me know and I will take it down. (and email you a copy)

BTW, not everyone who’s image I took is pon the blog.  If you had an image taken by me, please email me for your copy!

John And Angie (and Presley of course)

27 Nov

John and Angie asked me to take some shots of their family so that they might use one for their family Christmas card. Not everything was Christmas themed as they wanted to simply have some family photography as well.

First time shooting pet photography, I think Toddlers may be easier!!
But Presley was adorable in her little dress and hat.

Kaia Kenzie

12 Sep
Kaia’s Father and I have been friends for over thirty years, so having the opportunity to photograph her was both a joy and an honour. She really is a bundle of joy. She’s so spunky! Guaranteed, she will break more than a few boy’s hearts, Probably even my own son’s. Don’t believe me, have a look!
